Lucknow: Doctors at Shyama Prasad Mukherjee (Civil) Hospital have successfully removed a 3.5 kg tumour from a 29-year-old woman, preserving her uterus and future fertility.The tumour, measuring 35 cm by 20 cm by 15 cm, had grown to nearly five times the size of the uterus. It was located in the broad ligament, the tissue that supports the uterus, and had compressed both ureters, major blood vessels and an ovary. The pressure had obstructed urine flow from the kidneys, leading to swelling in the kidneys. The patient had been experiencing persistent lower abdominal pain and abdominal swelling.She was admitted on Aug 22, and a CT scan confirmed the large mass. Doctors also found she had severe anaemia, with haemoglobin around 6.5 grams per decilitre. Three units of blood were transfused to stabilise her condition ahead of surgery.The operation was performed on Aug 26. Dr Anand Mishra, head of the surgery department, said the tumour drew blood supply from the iliac vessels and was closely attached to the uterus, making removal complex and increasing the risk of heavy bleeding.Doctors carried out a broad ligament myomectomy, removing the mass while protecting surrounding structures. The patient, who has no children, was discharged on Saturday in stable condition. Junior residents Dr Vinod Kumar Verma and Dr Sachin Kumar assisted, with anaesthesia support from Dr SK Singh and Dr Mohammad Qasim. Hospital director Dr GP Gupta congratulated the team.
