SONIPAT: The alleged incident involving film producer Amit Jani’s Defender SUV on National Highway-352A in Haryana’s Sonipat district has taken a new turn, with police stating that their investigation did not substantiate the allegations of firing and an attempted attack. Jani had alleged that unidentified men chased his vehicle, brandished weapons and opened fire near Devdu village on the night of October 18, 2026, while he was returning from a pilgrimage to Mata Vaishno Devi.According to Murthal police, the Hyundai i20 allegedly involved in the incident and its occupants have been identified. The police have offered a different account of the episode, saying the occupants of the i20 claimed that a cigarette thrown from the moving Defender had landed on their vehicle, prompting them to signal the SUV to stop.Jani had submitted a written complaint to Murthal police and sought legal action against those responsible. Police, however, said no FIR had been registered in the case so far.Murthal Station House Officer Inspector Rajiv Kumar said the driver and owner of the Hyundai i20 had been identified and questioned. According to the account given by the occupants, a cigarette thrown from the moving Defender landed on their car. They subsequently used an indicator to signal the SUV to stop. The SHO said the i20 driver had previously worked as a driver for Jani and recognised the Defender. According to the police version, the occupants attempted to stop the SUV, but it did not halt and proceeded directly to the police station. The owner of the i20 later returned to his home in Delhi.Police said their investigation did not substantiate the allegations of firing or an attack and described the complaint as unsubstantiated. The SHO also said Jani was escorted safely to the Haryana border after submitting his complaint. The police account differs significantly from Jani’s allegations. The claims made by the occupants of the i20 and the police’s conclusions could not be independently verified for this report.Jani has linked his concerns about personal security to disputes surrounding his film projects and levelled allegations against actor Salman Khan.Jani claimed that Khan had filed three cases against him in the Delhi High Court and that the matters were pending before the court. He said his film Kala Hiran had been completed and that a hearing in the related matter was scheduled for December 16.“Salman Khan is increasingly troubled by my filmmaking. He wants this film to be stopped. He gets threats issued through other people,” Jani alleged. He expressed apprehension that the dispute surrounding his film projects could be connected to the threats he says he has received. However, no independent evidence has been established linking Khan to the alleged highway incident. Khan’s response to Jani’s allegations was not available at the time of publication.Jani has also referred to a letter dated January 27, 2025, issued by the Haryana Police Special Task Force (STF), which he says highlights earlier security concerns involving people associated with a documentary on gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.according to the document made available, the letter was addressed to the Police Commissioner, Noida, and the Senior Superintendent of Police, Meerut. It was issued under the name of STF Deputy Inspector General Simranjit Singh. The letter referred to intelligence inputs about a serious threat to people involved in making the documentary Lawrence: A Gangster Story. It mentioned an alleged reconnaissance operation in Sector 17, Noida, by members of the Bambiha–Kaushal Chaudhary–Neeraj Faridpur–Himanshu Bhau gang, described in the document as a rival faction of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.According to the letter, the alleged reconnaissance was intended to assess security arrangements, possible routes and police presence. The people associated with the documentary were described as potential targets. The document identifies Bharat Singh as the director and Jani as the producer of the documentary, which was being made under the banner of Jani Firefox Films.Jani said he was granted Y-category security by the Union home ministry following the threat-related developments. However, the authenticity and current applicability of the intelligence inputs, as well as any connection between the 2025 letter and the October 2026 incident in Sonipat, have not been independently established.Jani expressed dissatisfaction with the police response and alleged that he had not received satisfactory information about the action being taken after he submitted his complaint. He demanded that CCTV footage from the highway and surrounding areas be examined to establish what happened. He said he had written to and emailed the Haryana Director General of Police and intended to seek an appointment with the chief minister. He also said he had emailed the Union home ministry over his security concerns.according to Jani, he visited Murthal police station on the night of October 18 but was dissatisfied with the conduct of the personnel there. He further claimed that Sub-Inspector Sultan Singh and another Haryana Police personnel visited his residence in Noida and sought video footage of the incident. Jani said he handed over the footage on a pen drive.Murthal SHO Inspector Rajiv Kumar said the i20 and its occupants had been identified and questioned. He reiterated that the investigation had not substantiated the allegations of firing and that no FIR had been registered so far.
