Chandigarh: Chandigarh’s transition towards cleaner mobility is showing up not just in the sale of new vehicles, but also in vehicles being brought into the city from other states. Over the past five years, registrations of transferred electric vehicles (EVs) have risen sharply, while diesel vehicles have witnessed a dramatic decline.The most striking jump has come in the LMV electric vehicle segment. In 2022, only 36 EVs transferred from other states were registered with the Chandigarh administration’s Registering and Licensing Authority (RLA). By September this year, the figure had surged to 596, an increase of more than 16 times.Transferred electric two-wheelers have also gained ground. Their number increased from 54 in 2022 to 154 so far in 2026.Diesel, meanwhile, appears to be travelling in the opposite direction.In 2022, as many as 4,398 diesel vehicles brought in from other states were registered in Chandigarh. The number fell to 1,299 in 2025, while only 761 such vehicles have been registered so far this year. Compared with 2022, that represents a decline of more than 80%.Officials said vehicles from other states generally reach Chandigarh’s registration rolls through three routes: purchase of a second-hand vehicle, relocation of the vehicle owner to Chandigarh, or purchase of a new vehicle outside the city followed by its transfer here.“Of these categories, a majority of transferred vehicles registered with the RLA are second-hand two-wheelers or four-wheelers,” sources in the Chandigarh administration said.The officials said registration of an outstation vehicle follows a prescribed procedure. Applicants are required to submit the necessary documents, including a no-objection certificate (NOC), before the vehicle can be registered with the Chandigarh RLA.The five-year figures also point to contrasting trends among other fuel categories. Registrations of transferred petrol-CNG vehicles climbed from 268 in 2022 to 397 so far this year. Petrol LMVs, however, recorded a steep decline, falling from 4,798 in 2022 to 1,503 in 2026 so far.Strong hybrids, which recorded no transferred registrations in 2022 and 2023, have also started making their presence felt, with 37 registrations in 2024, 224 in 2025 and 170 so far this year.
