Panaji: The streets of Goa transformed into a canvas of golden hues as vendors lined up to sell marigolds for Dussehra. Marigold cultivation in the state has recorded an estimated 30% increase this season compared with last year, with harvesting expected to continue for several weeks beyond Diwali, according to the directorate of agriculture.“Four years ago, we started with 75 hectares. Today, the area under cultivation is estimated at around 120 hectares. Harvesting is an ongoing process, and the final production figures are expected to become clearer as the season progresses. However, compared to last year, there has been an increase of at least 30%,” Chandrahas Desai, director of agriculture told TOI.He said that harvesting would continue for another 20 to 25 days and extend beyond Diwali, allowing farmers to bring more flowers to the market during the festive period.Marigold flowers are in demand during festivals and religious occasions, making the season particularly important for growers. The extended harvesting period could provide farmers with additional opportunities to market their produce, although the final yield will depend on crop conditions and the progress of harvesting.“Despite receiving less rainfall this season, marigold cultivation has not suffered any major adverse impact as the flower is a relatively hardy crop capable of withstanding dry conditions,” Desai said. The agriculture department distributed two hybrid marigold varieties—Tennis Ball, a yellow variety, and Ashtaganda, an orange variety, among farmers this season. The seedlings are sourced from nurseries in Kolhapur. Individual farmers in Goa under the State Sector Scheme are eligible for a subsidy of Rs 5 per hybrid seedling, subject to a minimum purchase of 750 seedlings for area expansion. The programme is not limited to commercial growers. Home gardeners and small-scale cultivators can also purchase one or two trays of seedlings.
