Bengaluru: When it comes to cheating in exams, students have never been short of inventive tricks. From chits slipped inside shoes to formulas scribbled inside the palms of one’s hands, the methods have been as old hat as ingenious. In a sign of how technology is changing the cheating game, a student of Mount Carmel deemed-to-be University was caught using smart glasses inside an exam hall and subsequently debarred. The first-semester exams are currently under way. On Tuesday, the invigilator noticed a student wearing glasses that looked suspicious. “The glasses were a little too big than the normal ones. Even though I felt something was amiss, I did not want to disturb the student. After an hour and half, I walked up to him and asked if he had issues with his eyesight. I also asked him if I could take a look at his glasses,” said the invigilator.“Once I wore it, there was a small sound. I have read about such glasses and seen ads. I am aware of what technology can do. I handed over the glasses to the authorities,” she added. The student has been barred from writing other papers too. He can attempt them in the third semester. His parents were informed, said the varsity authorities.“We are strict about exam rules and the sanctity of exams. The question is how do educational institutions handle the future? Challenges are going to be different. Our invigilators need to be appreciated for the effort. An ordinary person may not have spotted it,” said Prof Lekha George, vice-chancellor (in-charge) of the university. The seized smart glasses cost around Rs 34,000.ends
