17-year-old killed in group clash; 9 booked, 4 held

Varanasi: A 17-year-old boy was killed in a group clash at a Ganga ghat near Telianala on Sunday night after his sister, a floral garland seller, was abused by a rival vendor. As he tried to intervene, he was fatally attacked with a brick.ACP Kotwali Vijay Pratap Singh said Monday that the teenager died of severe head injuries sustained in the group clash at Sakka ghat under Adampur police station area. His family has filed a named FIR against nine people from the rival group. Four have been arrested, while raids are on to nab the five other accused. The body has been handed over to the family after post-mortem.An initial investigation found that the victim and his sister sold floral garlands to pilgrims at Sakka Ghat. On Sunday evening, another garland seller abused his sister, sparking a heated argument between the two. Women from both families then joined the quarrel. When the victim reached the spot to calm things down, men from the rival group allegedly attacked him.In their complaint, the family alleged Ravindra Kevat and eight others — Kishan, Kallu, Ranjita, Basant, Kanhaiya, Bharat, Takalu and Suman — from the rival group attacked the victim with a brick, leaving him critically injured. Family members and neighbours rushed him to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The family then protested at the hospital, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused.ACP Kotwali Vijay Pratap Singh spoke to the family and assured strict action against those found guilty.
