Gorakhpur: A 30-year-old undertrial prisoner lodged in Gorakhpur district jail died while undergoing treatment at the district hospital late Friday evening.The deceased, identified as Sameer Sheikh, was resident of Jaswal Bazar in Pipiganj.According to jail superintendent Dilip Kumar Pandey, Sheikh was sent to the district jail on Aug 19 following a court order in a case registered under the Domestic Violence Act.Pandey said Sheikh, a chronic alcoholic, was suffering from liver and kidney-related ailments. On the evening of Aug 21, he suffered a seizure inside the jail. He was provided immediate first aid, but his condition did not improve.The jail authorities subsequently shifted him to the district hospital, where doctors examined him in the emergency department and admitted him for treatment. A specialist doctor declared him dead at around 8.30pm, the jail superintendent said.The jail administration informed Sheikh’s family about his death. It has also requested the competent magistrate to nominate an officer for the inquest proceedings and postmortem, as per procedure.The circumstances surrounding the death will be ascertained through medico-legal and administrative proceedings.
