Dharamshala: The Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) has opposed the visit of Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi to India, accusing Beijing of continuing “occupation and repression” in Tibet. Yi is scheduled to take part in a meeting of the National Security Advisers of the BRICS countries to be held in New Delhi on June 22-23.In a statement issued on Sunday, the TYC criticised China’s “attempt to project itself as a responsible global power while continuing its illegal occupation and colonial rule over Tibet.”The TYC alleged that Tibet has witnessed political repression, cultural restrictions, demographic changes and human rights violations under Chinese rule. It also raised concerns over Beijing’s policies on Tibetan language, religion and cultural identity, including what it described as the “forced assimilation” of Tibetan children through boarding schools.Referring to reported discussions between Indian and Chinese officials on the border issue, the organisation claimed that the present India-China boundary tensions are a result of China’s takeover of Tibet. “The Sino-Indian border dispute is fundamentally a consequence of China’s occupation of Tibet,” the statement said, adding that a lasting solution to the border issue cannot be achieved without addressing the Tibet question.TYC said that before the Chinese takeover of Tibet, India and Tibet shared a peaceful border and argued that the Tibetan issue has implications beyond human rights, including regional security and environmental concerns due to the importance of the Tibetan plateau’s rivers and ecosystems.
