IIT Delhi MSc student dies after fall from campus building

New Delhi: A 26-year-old MSc Physics student at IIT Delhi died after allegedly jumping from the sixth floor of a building on the institute’s campus Saturday morning.Police said a PCR call was received around 8.33 am reporting that a student had jumped from a building inside the campus. A team from Kishangarh police station reached the spot and found the student injured. He was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.Crime Team and forensic science laboratory (FSL) personnel inspected the scene and collected evidence. Police later identified the deceased as a student who was pursuing MSc Physics at the institute.According to investigators, the student entered the campus through the main gate around 8 am and proceeded to Lecture Hall Complex. He took a lift to the sixth floor and allegedly jumped from the front side of the building.“Preliminary inquiry shows no apparent injury marks, other than those attributable to the fall. No suicide note has been found. A mobile phone was recovered from the pocket of the deceased and will be examined,” police said.Investigators said counselling records and other relevant information were being obtained from the institute as part of the investigation. A senior officer said the student had recently returned after a period of hospitalisation.In a statement, IIT said, “The institute deeply mourns the tragic and untimely demise of an MSc student on Aug 22. Delhi Police is investigating the matter. Our deepest thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family. The institute is providing all possible support to them.”In March, a first-year BTech student at IIT Delhi was also suspected to have died by suicide on the campus. Police found no suicide note. Investigators had said the preliminary investigation suggested the student may have suffered from depression.
