Varanasi: Hundreds of students staged a protest at an inter college in Ajmatgarh, Azamgarh, on Tuesday, demanding appointment of teachers for physics, chemistry and mathematics. The students alleged that the college had been running without physics and chemistry teachers since June, while there had been no mathematics teacher for nearly nine years. They claimed the shortage had severely affected their studies. The college has more than 1,100 students and admissions are still underway. The protesting students questioned the collection of Rs50 per student in the name of the three subjects despite the absence of teachers and demanded that the fee not be collected until the posts are filled. The college administration, however, denied the allegation of extra fee collection and said only govt-approved fees were being charged. The students staged the protest for about two hours and warned of another agitation, if teachers are not appointed within 48 hours. After being informed about the protest, Jiyanpur police reached the spot. Sub-inspector Shyam Ji Yadav tried to pacify the students, but they remained firm on their demands. Later, principal Ramnakul Rao assured the students that arrangements would be made for teachers soon. Following the assurance, the students called off the protest.
