Duo assault railway clerk, flee with Rs4.9L valuables

Pune: Two unidentified men attacked and assaulted a 29-year-old commercial-cum-ticket clerk (CCTC) of the Indian Railways with a knife in the early hours of Tuesday and robbed him of Rs26,685 in ticket counter collections, two mobile phones and a gold chain, collectively worth Rs4.91 lakh.The robbery occurred around 1am when the victim was about to leave the booking counter at Tadiwala Road, the second entrance to Pune railway station, to deposit the Rs 26,685 collection at the main booking office near the station’s main entrance.“When he opened the counter door, he saw two unidentified men standing outside. They held a knife to his throat and pushed him inside the counter. One of them assaulted the clerk with the knife. To save himself, he grabbed the knife and sustained injuries to his right hand,” an officer from the Bund Garden police said.The officer said when the complainant resisted, the duo beat him with their hands and legs and assaulted him again. They threatened to kill him and demanded cash.“The duo then snatched Rs 26,685 from him. They also robbed him of his two mobile phones and a gold chain, collectively worth Rs 4.91 lakh,” he said.Before fleeing, the duo tied the complainant’s hands and legs with tape and gagged his mouth with a handkerchief. The complainant then managed to free himself and inform the railway’s commercial office and police.A case has been registered under sections 309 (robbery), 127 (wrongful confinement), 132 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging his duty) and 134 (assault or criminal force in an attempt to commit theft of property carried by a person) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).“The complainant provided a detailed description of the duo,” the officer said.Police sub-inspector Ganesh Chavan of the Bund Garden police told TOI, “We have recovered CCTV footage from different spots. We are working on some clues and will soon arrest them.”Chavan said the Bund Garden police and the Government Railway Police (GRP) conducted joint patrols on the railway station premises. “We will intensify patrolling,” he said.
