Rajkot: More than four years after a woman died following childbirth at Bhavnagar’s Sir Takhtsinhji (Sir T) Hospital, Nilambaug police registered an FIR against two women doctors and other unidentified persons on the orders of a special court. The case was registered under IPC Sections 167 (public servant framing incorrect document), 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 31, 114, and Section 4(1) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.According to the complaint, the deceased, Geeta Solanki, a resident of Umarala village in Talaja taluka, was allegedly transfused with B(-ve) blood despite her blood group being A(-ve), triggering an adverse reaction that ultimately led to her death. The complaint was filed by Geeta’s brother, Mukesh Miyatra, who stated that she was receiving regular antenatal care at Gariyadhar Community Health Centre. Her Mamta Card and referral documents reportedly recorded her blood group as A(-ve).On April 28, 2022, Geeta was admitted to Sir T Hospital after going into labour and delivered a baby girl later that night. Following excessive bleeding, she underwent surgery and was shifted to the intensive care unit. The complainant alleged that hospital authorities later demanded B(-ve) blood for transfusion. When family members questioned the mismatch in blood groups, the doctor on duty allegedly told them that B(-ve) blood had already been administered. Geeta’s condition subsequently deteriorated, and she died on May 6, 2022.The complaint further alleged that since the deceased belonged to a scheduled caste, false entries were deliberately made in her medical records and fabricated blood group documents were prepared to conceal the alleged negligence. The family claimed they had earlier approached Nilambaug police, the Bhavnagar superintendent of police and the district collector, but no action was taken. They later moved the court seeking legal intervention.Based on directions issued by the 5th Additional Sessions Judge and Special Atrocity Court, Bhavnagar, through the SC-ST Cell, Nilambaug police have now registered the FIR.Police said the investigation was under way and will examine medical records, documentary evidence and witness statements to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the alleged wrongful blood transfusion and subsequent death.
