50% of Jio customers now use 5G: DRHP

Kolkata: Over 50% — nearly 268.5 million — of Jio’s 524.4 million customers use 5G, making it the largest 5G operator outside China by subscriber base, according to the company’s DRHP.The company said in its filings that Jio built an end-to-end ‘Made in India’ 4G/5G core instead of importing vendor software, in line with the country’s strategy of shifting from foreign-built systems to engineering its own digital infrastructure backed by 11,303 employees and 6,817 patent filings. The DRHP further talks about how India went from “rationing megabytes” to “assuming bandwidth was infinite”, driven largely by Jio’s infrastructure shift. It states data costs have fallen 97% from Rs 228 per GB in 2016 to Rs 7.9 per GB, pushing average subscriber usage on Jio’s network to 42.3 GB monthly.Across India, average 4G and 5G subscribers reached 938 million, the DRHP states. The abundance laid the groundwork for a broader economic shift: digital wallet users surged to 556 million by FY26, while OTT streaming audiences expanded to 601 million.
