Kolar: An 18-year-old student died of electrocution while removing decorative lighting installed near a Ganesha pandal at Beerandahalli village in Bangarapet taluk Wednesday.The deceased has been identified as Mithun, a resident of Beerandahalli. He was a II PU student at a private college in Kolar. According to locals, the incident took place when Mithun was removing the decorative lights at the pandal ahead of Ganesha immersion. He accidentally came in contact with a live wire near the site and collapsed.Villagers rushed to his aid and provided first aid before shifting him to a hospital in a car. However, doctors declared him brought dead. A woman who witnessed the incident is said to have told police that a water pipe and other materials were lying close to the electrical wires and might have triggered the tragedy.Ravikumar, police inspector of Bangarapet, said the incident occurred around 8.30am Wednesday. According to him, while villagers were celebrating the festival together under a common pandal, Mithun and his father had chosen to celebrate separately.The idol had been donated to them by some individuals and was installed near the village temple. They had drawn power from the temple for the decorative lighting around the idol. The villagers had reportedly advised them to join the common celebrations.DSP Lakshmaiah visited the spot and inspected the electrical connections and decorative lighting arrangements. Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the electrocution, including the status of the power connection and whether adequate safety measures had been followed.
