Gurgaon: It may have been a hot and humid Wednesday in the city, but the monsoon has made a sharp turnaround over the past fortnight. After ending July with a 13% rainfall deficit, the district has moved into surplus territory, receiving 140.9mm of rain between Aug 1 and 12, according to the latest India Meteorological Department (IMD) data.The district has now received 333.9mm of rain between June 1 and Aug 12, which is 12% above normal (298.1mm) for this period.Till July 31, cumulative rainfall was only 193mm — 13% below normal. Around 42% of the season’s rainfall so far has come in just 12 days of Aug, effectively wiping out the entire deficit recorded during June and July.The city on Wednesday recorded a minimum temperature of 22°C — the lowest in Haryana and 4.3°C below normal — 6°C lower than Tuesday’s minimum of 28°C. Tuesday’s maximum stood at around 34°C. The cooler morning did not bring much respite during the day, with high humidity making conditions uncomfortable despite the relatively low minimum temperature.The break from rain may be brief. IMD’s district-wise forecast shows isolated rainfall in the district on Aug 13, followed by a more widespread spell on Aug 14, when the district falls in the ‘many’ category — meaning 50-75% of rainfall reporting stations are expected to receive rain. The weather warning map indicates that people should remain updated about developments that day.Rainfall activity is expected to ease thereafter, with Gurgaon in the ‘few’ category (25-50% of reporting stations) on both Aug 15 and 16. The forecast suggests the district could add further to its Aug total over the coming days, although IMD has not issued a higher-level severe weather warning.The rainfall turnaround has also been visible across southern Haryana. Faridabad has received 357.7mm, 11% above normal, while Nuh has recorded 317.6mm, 14% above normal. Palwal, with 330.6mm, is 41% above normal.The monsoon remains uneven across the state, however. Ambala is still running 54% below normal, Kaithal 48% below normal and Jind 45% below normal.
