26 schoolkids discharged from hospital

Kolkata: Twenty-six students of Park Institution were discharged from RG Kar medical college on Wednesday. Sources said that the rest of the seven are fine. They will also be sent home in a day or two. The students from the school had fallen ill, leading to their hospitalisation. While influenza A infection has been found in some of them, health officials said influenza is unlikely to be the cause.“Influenza A infection looks like only an incidental finding. The symptoms that these children have suggest infection from food/water contamination. Symptoms are mild and none are in serious condition,” said a senior health official.A delegation led by Debashis Roy, joint director (public health) of Swasthya Bhawan, visited RG Kar Hospital and also the school. Another team from National Institute for Research in Bacterial Infections Kolkata also collected samples of water, food and milk in search for source of infection. Health minister Shardwat Mukherjee has already visited the hospital twice to check on the admitted students.“The samples collected from the school hostel will undergo tests at various labs, including NIRBI and RG Kar Medical College. It will take at least five more days for the test results to come. Then only we can be sure of the source of contamination,” said the health official.
