VDA plans Anand Kanan Kala Gurukul to promote Kashi’s cultural heritage

Varanasi: With the objective of giving a new direction to Kashi’s cultural heritage, the Varanasi Development Authority (VDA) is developing the concept of Anand Kanan Kala Gurukul at Anand Kanan in Ravidas Park. The proposed Gurukul aims to strengthen Kashi’s identity as a global cultural centre while preserving and promoting Indian culture, music, dance and fine arts.VDA Vice-Chairman Purn Bora said the Gurukul is being envisioned not merely as a training institute but as a comprehensive cultural centre rooted in the Indian guru-shishya tradition, cultural values and artistic sadhana. It will impart training in diverse Indian art forms, including music, dance, instrumental performance, theatre and painting, combining traditional teaching methods with modern requirements. To finalise the concept before implementing the project, the VDA has sought suggestions from artists, including Manish Khatri, and former officials such as Ratnesh Verma of Subah-e-Banaras.The proposed campus will be developed on the concept of a Vedic Gurukul village, blending natural surroundings, Indian architectural styles and a spiritual ambience. Located near the Ganga, it is expected to provide students and artists with an environment conducive to artistic practice while offering an immersive experience of Indian culture. The Gurukul will provide comprehensive training in classical and semi-classical music, folk music, Kathak, classical and folk dance, various musical instruments, theatre, painting, photography, exhibitions and workshops. Artists will also receive opportunities to showcase their work through national and international exhibitions and workshops.According to the VDA, the initiative aims not only to nurture skilled artists but also to create cultural ambassadors capable of representing Indian culture, traditions and Sanatan values on the global stage. The authority expects the Anand Kanan Kala Gurukul to emerge as a major centre of Kashi’s cultural identity and attract students, artists and researchers from India and abroad.
