Forms Panel After MSc Student’s DeathGuwahati: Tezpur University will set up a high-level committee to review its students’ mental-wellness support system after the alleged suicide of an MSc student in a hostel.Fifth-semester chemical sciences student Jyotishman Boruah of Nagaon was found hanging in his hostel room on Wednesday.Police sources said preliminary findings after the autopsy pointed to a personal relationship-related issue. They ruled out career-related concerns as a possible factor.“The probable reason appears to be linked to a personal relationship-related matter,” a police source said.“As part of its continued commitment to student welfare, the university will constitute a high-level committee to review the existing mechanisms for supporting students’ mental well-being and to identify measures for strengthening them. The Committee will engage with all relevant stakeholders, including students, faculty members, wardens, counsellors, and other members concerned of the university community, to understand their experiences and suggestions and recommend appropriate measures,” TU said in a media release on Thursday.The university said it was extending necessary support and cooperation to the authorities. It added that the exact circumstances and possible factors leading to the incident were yet to be officially established.“Therefore, the university urges stakeholders to respect the privacy, dignity, and emotional well-being of the bereaved family, friends, and fellow students. The university appeals to everyone to exercise sensitivity and refrain from sharing unverified information or personal details, and avoid speculation that may deepen the pain of those grieving this tragic loss,” the statement read.The university has two counsellors and an MoU with LGBRIMH for mental-health awareness and student support. It will now review the effectiveness of these measures.
