Bengaluru: Mahan Mj, professor at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research’s School of Mathematics in Mumbai, has been selected for the inaugural KRS Sastry Prize instituted by Indian Institute of Science’s department of mathematics.The six-member jury of international mathematicians recognised Mahan for his contributions to geometry, groups, dynamics and probability. The prize carries Rs 5 lakh and a citation.The prize was established through the generosity of late KR Shankaranarayana Sastry, a mathematics enthusiast and IISc well-wisher. It will be awarded every four years to an Indian mathematician working in the country for long-term contributions to the subject.Born in West Bengal in 1968, Mahan received his master’s degree from IIT Kanpur in 1992 and completed his PhD at University of California, Berkeley, in 1997. He is also a monk of the Ramakrishna Order.
