Pune: A 43-year-old resident of Rasta Peth was killed on Thursday afternoon after a water tanker ran over him in Hadapsar. Following the incident, the Hadapsar police registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against both the tanker owner and the driver. The victim, identified as Pratik Sheth, was riding his scooter towards Urali Kanchan for work. Around 1:45 PM, as he reached Ravi Darshan bus stop in Hadapsar, a speeding water tanker struck his scooter. Sheth fell from the vehicle and was crushed under the wheels of the tanker. The driver, identified as Avinash Jadhav (33), a resident of Hadapsar, abandoned the vehicle at the spot and fled. He was later apprehended and taken into custody.Police officials stated that the investigation revealed gross negligence regarding safety standards. “The tanker was not equipped with a 360-degree camera, and there was no cleaner present to assist the driver. Furthermore, the driver failed to stop immediately after the initial collision, resulting in the victim being run over,” a senior officer said.Due to these safety violations and the nature of the driver’s actions, the police have registered the case under Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the tanker owner and Jadhav. This charge is significantly more severe than the standard “rash and negligent driving” typically applied in road accidents.eom\mt
