Noida: GB Nagar administration has formed tehsil- and area-wise teams to check sugar hoarding and profiteering amid a rise in prices despite adequate stocks.“The teams have been instructed to conduct regular campaigns in their respective areas to detect illegal stockpiling and profiteering. Officials have also been directed to take strict action as per rules wherever violations are found,” said additional district magistrate (Finance and Revenue) Ajit Kumar Singh.Stock limits for sugar dealers came into effect on Aug 1 and will remain in force until Nov 30, 2026, under state govt directions.Centre’s July 28 order issued by Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution bars dealers from storing sugar for more than 30 days from the date of receipt. It also caps their stock at 4,000 quintals at any one time or location, subject to specified exemptions.The limits do not apply to stocks held on govt’s account or those stored by dealers designated by state govts for distribution through fair-price shops under the public distribution system.State govts and Union territories may also set stock-holding and turnover limits within the ceiling and period prescribed by Centre.The district administration said inspections would continue to ensure adequate supplies and prevent hoarding from driving up prices.
