Pune: PMC standing committee members expressed concerns over increasing complaints of turbid water supply across the city during Thursday meeting, directing the civic administration to take immediate measures to ensure the supply of clean drinking water to residents.Standing committee chairperson Shrinath Bhimale said the members sought an explanation from officials regarding the contaminated water being supplied in several parts of the city. PMC has been told to inspect the water purification plants at Parvati and other locations to identify the causes behind the problem and submit an action-taken report within the next two days, he said.Senior civic officials, including municipal commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, will visit the water treatment facilities to assess the situation and discuss corrective measures.Bhimale said the committee was dissatisfied with the explanations provided by officials regarding the reasons for the discoloured water supply and therefore insisted on site inspections. He also directed PMC to prepare a comprehensive plan for upgrading the city’s water purification infrastructure, keeping in mind the requirements of the next 25 years.Apart from the water issue, the standing committee reviewed ongoing road repair works. Bhimale said PMC has floated tenders worth Rs 60 crore for road repairs and resurfacing, and the road department has been instructed to expedite the projects.Garbage processing projects under scrutinyThe committee also discussed proposed garbage processing plants at Uruli Devachi, including the expenditure involved in transporting waste to the facilities. PMC plans to set up separate processing units for wet and dry waste, though the contractor for the project has not yet been finalised.Opposition parties raised concerns over the overall cost of the proposed projects and demanded greater transparency in the tendering process. Bhimale said final decision has not been taken regarding the allocation of the contract and that PMC would not award the work to the garbage processing agency linked to the Moshi mishap.Congress member Prashant Jagtap urged PMC to ensure a fair and transparent bidding process and avoid showing favouritism towards any particular agency while awarding the contract.
