Margao: South Goa SP Akshat Ayush on Friday visited an old-age home and a halfway home at Fatorda and Majorda to enquire about the welfare of the residents.Ayush, who interacted with the residents and staff, said the visit was a routine check.He said the police occasionally send people found to be of unsound mind to such facilities, and he therefore thought it was appropriate to visit a couple of them. One of the places visited was a halfway home for persons who had needed psychiatric help and have since recovered. “They can be reintegrated into society,” the SP said.Asked about the police’s outreach to elderly people living alone, Ayush said the state-level initiative was still on. Under the scheme, beat police visit such citizens, keep a tab on them and extend any assistance they need.He said the birthdays of senior citizens living alone are also taken into account, and police celebrate with them. The occasion gives the police an opportunity to build ties with the elderly citizens and gives the elderly reassurance that they are cared for.
