Panaji: A few parts of Goa received light showers on Saturday evening as weather systems over the Arabian Sea brought some relief from the sultry conditions prevailing over the past few days.Two upper-air cyclonic circulation systems persisted over the west-central Arabian Sea and the southeast Arabian Sea off the Kerala coast. A trough extending from the southeast Arabian Sea to the east-central Arabian Sea, off the Kerala-Karnataka-Goa-Maharashtra coast, was also present at 0.9km above mean sea level, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Panaji.The lack of rain, coupled with high day and night temperatures, has led to oppressive conditions, causing considerable discomfort. Sanquelim received brisk showers, while overcast conditions over several other parts of the state also provided some respite.On Saturday, the maximum temperature at IMD, Panaji rose to 34.5°C, which was 3.5°C above normal. The minimum temperature also increased marginally to 26°C, nearly 2°C above normal. At Mormugao, the maximum temperature was 33.6°C and the minimum was 25.4°C.“Oct is the cruelest month with high humidities and low winds, as is being currently experienced in Goa,” said M R Ramesh Kumar, chief scientist (retired) at NIO and meteorologist.IMD, Panaji, has forecast light to very light rain at isolated places, particularly in the ghat areas, till Tuesday.Post-monsoon showers, which typically occur during the evening after hot daytime conditions, are expected to bring some relief in the coming days. However, with El Nino conditions prevailing, the intensity of the rainfall remains uncertain.
