Varanasi: In a major step towards modernising correctional facilities and making them self-reliant, UP govt is equipping Varanasi Central Jail with solar energy. A 330 KW solar power plant is being installed on the jail premises, which is expected to significantly reduce electricity expenses while promoting environmental conservation.Once operational, the solar plant will generate around 1,400 units of electricity per day. According to Central Jail superintendent Radha Krishna Mishra, the project is expected to save approximately Rs 14.6 lakh annually and reduce the jail’s electricity bill by nearly 50 %.The initiative is also important from the point of view of security. Power cuts often pose challenges in maintaining security arrangements inside the jail. With solar-based power supply, uninterrupted electricity can be ensured in barracks, administrative offices and other key areas of the prison complex.The project will also help reduce carbon emissions and support the vision of clean energy and a healthier environment. Officials said the solar plant will not only ease financial burden on govt but also improve internal facilities for inmates and jail staff.The initiative is being seen as part of state govt’s broader effort to transform prisons into modern, sustainable and self-reliant correctional institutions.
