Chennai: India’s renewable energy sector has begun FY27 on a strong footing, sustaining its record-breaking pace of capacity additions during the first quarter (Apr–June), driven largely by robust solar installations. Building on the momentum of recent months, the sector added more than 13.3 GW of renewable energy capacity—excluding large hydro—during the quarter, with solar alone contributing nearly 12 GW. The Q1 addition also surpassed the 12.3 GW added in the corresponding quarter of FY26.During the April–June 2026 period, the solar power sector added 11.9 GW of new capacity to the grid, while the wind energy sector added 1.3 GW, according to data from the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.Including 650 MW of large hydro capacity, the country’s total renewable energy capacity addition during the first quarter of FY27 stood at 13.9 GW. In the year-ago quarter, the solar sector added 10.6 GW, while the wind sector contributed 1.6 GW.Among the states, Gujarat led renewable energy capacity additions in Q1, adding about 4.4 GW to take its total installed renewable energy capacity to 51.5 GW as of June-end. Rajasthan followed with an addition of around 2.5 GW, increasing its renewable capacity to 49.5 GW, while Uttar Pradesh added nearly 1.7 GW to reach 8.7 GW. Maharashtra expanded its renewable portfolio by about 1.1 GW to 33.1 GW, while Tamil Nadu added around 668 MW, taking its total renewable energy capacity to 29.8 GW.The country has also built a 2.5-year utility-scale renewable pipeline, with 215 GW of Letters of Award (LoAs) issued during FY18–FY26, comprising 174 GW of solar and 41 GW of wind capacity. Of this, 145 GW has secured power purchase agreements (PPAs) and 75 GW has been commissioned, leaving a development pipeline of 70 GW, including 58 GW of solar and 12 GW of wind. Annual utility-scale renewable installations are currently running at around 21 GW, according to a report by Equirus.
