Gurgaon: Six high-tension (HT) electricity poles collapsed on the Gurgaon-Faridabad Road near Ghata on Wednesday afternoon, damaging an SUV travelling on the road and triggering major traffic congestion on one of the city’s busiest corridors. No injuries were reported.The incident occurred around 1pm on the carriageway towards Gwal Pahari and Faridabad, when the poles gave way and fell across the road, bringing traffic to a halt. “We barricaded the area and diverted traffic to ensure public safety,” said Pradeep, a traffic police officer at the site.According to DHBVN officials, the poles had recently been installed as part of an ongoing project to lay a high-tension transmission line for the Gwal Pahari area. Preliminary findings suggest that heavy rainfall caused soil erosion around the newly erected poles, weakening their foundation. “One of the poles tilted under the weight of the conductor, resulting in the collapse of adjacent poles,” said DHBVN superintending engineer Manoj Yadav.Yadav said the fallen poles were removed and the road cleared to restore traffic movement. Authorities are also assessing the stability of the remaining poles and reviewing safety measures at the construction site.A traffic police officer said the electricity department was informed immediately after the incident, and its team reached the site promptly. “The incident caused brief traffic congestion, but normal vehicular movement was restored soon after the road was cleared,” the officer said.However, commuters said traffic remained heavily congested for some time after the collapse. “Traffic came to a complete standstill near Ghata. The Gurgaon-to-Faridabad carriageway was blocked, while the opposite side remained open. Many two-wheeler riders started driving on the wrong side to get past the jam, making the situation even more dangerous. It took me nearly 30 minutes to cross the Ghata stretch,” said Rohit Sharma, who was travelling from the city to Faridabad.Atul, another commuter, said he was stuck for 45 minutes. “Traffic towards Faridabad was affected. The road already has various stretches that witness congestion throughout the day,” he said.
