Chandigarh: Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has accused the AAP govt in Punjab of failing to protect those raising their voice against drugs from violence and harassment. In a social media post, Rahul said, “Raising a voice against drugs in Punjab has now become a death sentence. And this is happening under the rule of Bhagwant Mann’s AAP govt.” Rahul cited the recent murder of Parminder Singh Jhota, who ran a ‘Stop Drugs, Give Employment’ campaign but was shot dead in clear daylight in Mansa while on Facebook live.“In Sangrur, the chief minister’s own district, labourer Gulzar Singh raised the issue of drugs in the village in front of the minister. The family alleges that afterward, pressure was put on him to apologise. He died by suicide,” Rahul said, adding that allegations of custodial torture had been levelled against Mohanjeet Singh, who spoke out against drugs in Sangrur. The case is now in high court.“And there’s one more thing in Jhota’s story: when he lodged a complaint, an FIR was registered, but later police booked Jhota himself. In a govt where the complainant becomes the accused, why wouldn’t drug peddlers roam fearless?” Rahul asked. He asked Mann: “Who will protect those fighting against drugs?” Rahul said Congress would not rest until the drug network “that’s destroying the future of Punjab’s youth” was dismantled.
