Shah, Saha & Pradyot meet over Tripura village polls

Agartala: Union home minister Amit Shah, Tripura chief minister Manik Saha and TIPRA Motha chief Pradyot Kishore Debbarman met in New Delhi on Friday ahead of Village Committee elections under Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC).The meeting has fuelled speculation about a possible political understanding between BJP and TIPRA Motha. Saha described the discussions as “fruitful and constructive”, saying they focused on matters of mutual interest and the development and welfare of Tripura.According to sources, the meeting at Shah’s residence focused on issues concerning the state’s indigenous tribal population, implementation of Tripartite Agreement and preparations for Village Committee elections.Sources said Shah assured TIPRA Motha leaders that steps would be taken to implement the agreement at the earliest. The issue has been a key demand of the party and a major point of discussion between TIPRA Motha and BJP.The sources said the discussions also covered land rights for indigenous communities and that these would be addressed in accordance with the provisions of Sixth Schedule of Constitution.They also said Tripartite Agreement would be implemented in two phases, with govt expected to provide land rights shortly. The meeting reportedly included assurances to protect the identity, culture and interests of indigenous tribal communities.The meeting has intensified speculation about a possible BJP-TIPRA Motha alliance ahead of Village Committee elections.
