Amritsar: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on Friday held a protest demanding the removal of the ban on the film ‘Satluj’, calling it a reminder for the younger generations about the painful truths of Punjab’s history. The Diljit Dosanjh starrer is a biopic on human rights activists Jaswant Singh Khalra who highlighted illegal extrajudicial killings and was abducted and murdered in 1995. It was banned just two days after its release on OTT platform ZEE5.Carrying placards and banners demanding justice for Khalra and victims of human rights violations in the turbulent late 1980s and 90s, SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami, members, officials and employees marched from Ghanta Ghar Plaza outside Golden Temple to the deputy commissioner’s office. The protesters submitted a memorandum addressed to the governor listing their demands. Dhami called Khalra’s sacrifice as an unparalleled contribution to truth and human rights, hailing him for courageously documenting the disappearance of Sikh youths at a time fear and terror prevailed in Punjab. On the directive of Akal Takht officiating Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj, Dhami appealed to the Sikh community to participate in the July 14 prayer gathering to be held on the banks of the Satluj river in memory of the martyrs.
