Darjeeling: US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Thursday visited Darjeeling, taking a ride on the iconic Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and exploring the Mall. He expressed hope that more American tourists would visit the hill town to experience its “beauty, tranquillity and unique charm”.Gor, accompanied by members of his team, was in Darjeeling at the invitation of Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Vardhan Shringla. During his visit, the US envoy also interacted with students and young people.At Shringla’s residence, Ivanhoe, near the historic Mall, Gor sampled Darjeeling delicacies, including momos and Castleton First Flush tea. He said he had “thoroughly enjoyed” his visit.The Toy Train ride was among the highlights of the visit, with Gor travelling aboard the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, one of the region’s major heritage attractions.Shringla highlighted Darjeeling’s tourism potential and the need to showcase its natural beauty, heritage and culture to an international audience.“Darjeeling has immense tourism potential. Its natural beauty, heritage and culture need to be showcased to the world,” Shringla said.
