Bengaluru: Karnataka govt Friday launched a robotic surgery system at Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedics (SGITO), making it the first govt hospital in the state to introduce robotic-assisted joint replacement surgery. The Rs 3-crore robotic system was inaugurated by medical education and skill development minister Sharan Prakash Patil. The technology is expected to improve precision in knee and hip replacement surgeries by enabling accurate implant positioning, reducing surgical trauma and blood loss, and helping patients recover faster.Speaking at the launch, Patil said the govt had installed it as part of its efforts to equip hospitals with advanced medical technology. “The govt is committed to gradually introducing robotic surgery systems in all major govt hospitals across the state. A proposal in this regard has already been submitted to the chief minister,” he said.He added Karnataka had earlier installed its first robotic surgery system at Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology (KMIO) in 2016, while a similar facility now been introduced at the Institute of Nephro-Urology (INU). The govt also plans to establish a state-of-the-art rehabilitation centre at SGITO and develop similar advanced healthcare facilities at Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health (IGICH).
