BENGALURU: Karnataka high court came down heavily on Whitefield police, with Justice M Nagaprasanna suggesting that the police station be renamed “Darkfield” for allegedly detaining an Udupi man booked in a suo motu case even before his deadline for appearance before investigating officer had expired.“Change the name from Whitefield to Darkfield police station. Is this the way to exercise police powers? Should a court tutor you?” the judge asked police inspector and investigating officer Preetham, ACP N Reena Suvarna, and DCP Saidulu Adavath, who were present in court.The observations came during the hearing of a petition filed by Mohan Gowda, a Udupi resident associated with Hindu Rashtra Samanvaya Samithi.Gowda had opposed comedian Kunal Kamra’s show at Uru in Whitefield and, after it was cancelled, posted on Facebook that the cancellation was a victory for Hindu unity.Following the post, a Whitefield police constable registered a suo motu complaint, citing apprehension of a threat to communal harmony.Police issued Gowda a notice, asking him to appear before the investigating officer within three days.However, even before the deadline expired, he was allegedly picked up by police, prompting him to move HC.
