Ahmedabad: To modernise salt production, processing, and quality control, Marine Salt Manufacturers Association has requested a dedicated national institution to spearhead research, skill development, and sustainable practices in the sector.In a representation to the Prime Minister’s Office and the Gujarat Chief Minister’s Office, the association said the Indian salt industry faces challenges in meeting evolving global quality standards while preparing to raise production to nearly 55 million tonnes.“The industry has very few qualified technical professionals specialising in salt production, processing and technology. There was no dedicated institution focused on salt science and technology,” the representation stated.“The proposed institute should offer education, research, innovation and skill development in salt production, processing, quality control, logistics, environmental management and value-added products,” the association said.It also sought industry-driven research and development to improve salt yields amid changing climatic conditions, increase evaporation efficiency and reduce production costs. The association listed consistent product quality, development of value-added products and by-products from salt and bittern, better storage and logistics, automation, digital technologies and sustainable production practices among key priorities.It suggested that the salt department continue to operate from Gujarat, with its headquarters in Gandhinagar.
