Ahmedabad: Senior oncologists on Friday said that multiple factors, including lifestyle and consumption of substances such as tobacco, are responsible for the overall rise in cancer cases. As the burden of disease increases, the focus should be on early diagnostics and intervention. The oncologists were speaking on the occasion of the inauguration of KD Hospital Cancer Centre.Dr Adit Desai, managing director of KD Hospital, said that with the addition of a new building, the total capacity of the hospital is now 450 beds, of which over 60 are dedicated to cancer treatment. “We will soon add a rehabilitation centre for cancer patients in the same building to cover multiple aspects of post-operative treatment,” he said.Dr Somesh Chandra, senior consultant of surgical oncology and robotic surgery, said that for a state like Gujarat, the burden of head and neck cancer is relatively higher due to tobacco consumption. “Early diagnostics and intervention are the key to ensure quality of life for patients. The treatment should also be covered in insurance schemes,” he added.On the occasion, cancer patients who got recovered were also felicitated at the premises.
