Dibrugarh: All Assam Students’ Union (Aasu) will retain its non-political character and constitutional framework, general secretary Samiran Phukan said on Monday. His remarks came a day after comments on the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) triggered a debate in Assam. Phukan said attempts were being made to “twist” his remarks and drag Aasu into controversy. On Sunday, Phukan questioned the CJP’s visits to govt schools under its “School Thik Karo” campaign, alleging that its activities could create tension in Assam. He also raised questions about “external forces and foreign elements” and possible attempts to destabilise the state.Phukan said developmental activities were welcome if undertaken without a political agenda, but alleged that CJP’s activities were politically motivated. He said Aasu would continue raising issues, including price rises, education and govt school conditions. It will submit a memorandum against the education department’s decision to discontinue scholarship examinations.Phukan said Aasu would work to strengthen govt schools teaching in Assamese and press the govt to improve infrastructure. He urged people to consider his remarks in full context and not drag Aasu into political controversies. The organisation, he said, would continue working for Assam and its people within its organisational boundaries.
