Ahmedabad: New building proposals and redevelopment projects around Sabarmati railway station and the bullet train station have come to a standstill due to a govt ban. In May 2026, state govt included 257.6 hectares in the draft Area Development Plan. The urban development department then wrote to AMC instructing it not to grant development permissions in this earmarked area.A source said, “Four months ago, AMC stopped approving development permissions on specified plots in this designated area. Redevelopment plans for over 10 old societies in areas like Ranip, Vadaj and Sabarmati have stalled, and development plans for new buildings in Ranip and Sabarmati have been put on hold.”This has left locals concerned, the source said, adding, “It is unclear if permissions for these private properties will resume. Locals want to know if the state govt will acquire privately owned land and what will happen to private properties on this land,” a source said, requesting anonymity.Officials said that govt in 2014 approved the city development plan prepared by Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (Auda), which also outlined the Sabarmati railway station area development plan. With the bullet train project’s announcement, more land was brought under this plan.“The land around these stations has been earmarked under the existing 2014 Ahmedabad City Development Plan, although its 10-year period ended in Dec 2024 and a new plan is yet to be formulated. It includes 168.7 hectares on the Sabarmati station’s west and 88.8 hectares on its east,” the official said.
