Raj arms haul linked to suspected Punjab police attack

Jaipur/Jaisalmer: Rajasthan police are probing a possible link between a suspected Pakistan-origin arms consignment seized near the border in Sriganganagar district and a network accused of targeting police in Punjab.Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) recovered nearly 7 kg of suspected RDX, two Turkish-made handguns and more than 600 cartridges near Rawla Tuesday after a drone made three sorties in the area.A bomb disposal squad (BDS) team from Jaipur successfully disposed of the explosive material in two controlled detonations Wednesday. The blasts, which sent soil soaring into the air, created a nearly five-foot-deep crater at the location. Initially, the team neutralised a large detonator found alongside the RDX before proceeding to eliminate the remaining explosives. The operation, orchestrated under CID ASP Diksha Kamra, enforced a 100-metre exclusion zone around the site for safety. Official sources confirmed that the recovered material was identified as black RDX, a serious concern given that it was in an active state and had the potential to cause a significant explosion if coupled with the recovered remote and connectors. Forensic samples were collected prior to the destruction of the remaining material. Two Punjab-based men, Sukhwinder Singh and Lakhwinder Singh, both 19, have been arrested for allegedly receiving the consignment. Investigators are examining whether the explosives were intended for an attack on a police facility, though no such link has been established so far.Sources said the two men had been living in Rajasthan as labourers and farmers for about a month. They allegedly conducted recce in villages around Rawla and communicated with a handler through a social media app. Investigators suspect they received drone-dropped consignments of weapons and explosives from Pakistan on three occasions. The probe is also examining their alleged links to criminal cases in Punjab. Sources said Sukhwinder was suspected of involvement in a grenade attack on a police station in the state that injured several police personnel. Both men had also spent time in juvenile correctional homes in connection with separate cases.Experts examining the seized material suspect the RDX had been configured into an improvised explosive device (IED) with a remote-activation mechanism. Police sources said the quantity could cause extensive damage.“Along with the RDX and weapons, cartridges were found in different packets, scattered at the spot,” an official said.Investigators are working to establish the consignment’s intended destination, identify the handler and determine whether the recovered weapons and explosives were linked to any planned attack in Punjab.
