Pune city gets light rain, isolated heavy showers continue in ghats

Pune: The city and its adjoining areas received mostly very light to light rain on Tuesday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting similar conditions over the next few days though isolated parts of the Western Ghats recorded heavier showers.Between 8.30am and 5.30pm on Tuesday, Hadapsar recorded the highest rainfall in the city at 5mm, followed by Haveli (3mm), Talegaon and Nimgiri (2.5mm each) and Shivajinagar recorded 2.1mm. NDA, Pashan and Dapodi received 2mm each. Chinchwad logged 1mm of rain, while Koregaon Park, Daund, Girivan and Dudulgaon received 0.5mm each.During the preceding 24-hour period, from 8.30am on Monday to 8.30am on Tuesday, Kurvande recorded 13.5mm, while Ballalwadi and Nimgiri received 4.5mm each. Shivajinagar recorded 1.2mm, while Hadapsar, Pashan and Chinchwad received 1mm each.The ghats, however, saw significantly heavier rainfall at isolated locations. As per IMD data recorded till 8.30am on Tuesday, Ambone received 53mm of rain, Dawdi 51mm and Tamhini 50mm. Bhira received 38mm of rain and Shirgaon and Dungerwadi 35mm each during the period. Koyna (Navja) recorded 33mm.IMD scientist SD Sanap said the heavier showers in the ghats were isolated and linked to the prevailing low-pressure system and monsoonal winds. “We are not getting reports of heavy rainfall everywhere in the ghats. It is being reported at one or two places,” he said.Sanap said there was no official update yet on the formation of another low-pressure system, though the possibility could not be ruled out. For Maharashtra, widespread rainfall activity was not expected over the next five days, he said.The IMD’s Pune forecast said the city could see very light to light rain on Wednesday, while isolated heavy rain was possible in the ghats.
