Dhubri: Gauripur police intercepted a vehicle allegedly transporting cattle illegally at Targhat under Gauripur police station on Tuesday night.Acting on specific information, police set up a checkpoint and stopped the vehicle. The driver allegedly attempted to ram the police vehicle before fleeing towards Thuria Pahar.Police chased the vehicle, following which the driver and co-driver abandoned it and escaped. The vehicle later fell into a roadside ditch.Police recovered 17 cattle from the vehicle, of which 12 were alive and five had died. The surviving cattle were sent to Chirakhowa cattle shed, while the carcasses were sent for post-mortem examination.The vehicle was brought to Gauripur police station, and efforts are under way to identify and apprehend the driver and co-driver.A Dhubri crime branch official said 97 cattle had been seized or rescued in the district so far in August.
