Guwahati: BJP will launch a statewide protest in Assam from Tuesday against Congress’s opposition to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and what CM Himanta Biswa Sarma described as an attempt to “blackmail constitutional institutions”.State BJP president Dilip Saikia said on Monday the party would organise “Jan Jagaran Processions” at district headquarters across the state until October 31.The first phase of the campaign will begin in Nalbari and cover six other locations — Guwahati, Silchar, Tezpur, Barpeta, Jorhat and Dibrugarh. A large number of young people are expected to participate.“Through these gatherings, we shall endeavour to awaken public awareness against the Congress party’s unconstitutional activities,” Saikia said.In a social media post, Sarma said the campaign would reaffirm support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP’s vision of building a developed India by 2047.“Our position is clear: the people’s invaluable mandate must be respected. The independence of our constitutional institutions must be preserved. No one can threaten or hold these institutions hostage for political convenience,” Sarma wrote.Addressing a news conference at the BJP headquarters, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan, Saikia alleged that Congress-led parties were conspiring with foreign forces to create instability under the pretext of protests.“Congress, under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership, is pursuing the politics of anarchy in collusion with hostile foreign forces under the pretext of protest,” Saikia alleged. He accused Congress of undermining democracy, alleging that the party accepted electoral outcomes when it won but questioned the electoral process when it faced defeat. In a statement, the Assam BJP referred to the Congress’s electoral setbacks in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat and Assam while questioning its opposition to the SIR exercise.“Is SIR responsible for Congress’s humiliating defeats in these states over so many years?” Saikia asked.
