North Cachar Hills council name change order draws flak, IPF threatens bandh

Silchar: The Indigenous People’s Forum (IPF) and other apex bodies in Dima Hasao opposed a directive requiring departments to use “Dima Hasao Autonomous Council” instead of “North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council”.Addressing the media in Haflong on Thursday, IPF functionaries gave the council 14 days to withdraw the Aug 31 directive and restore what they described as the constitutionally prescribed nomenclature. They threatened an indefinite bandh affecting road and railway services if their demand was not met.The council’s principal secretary issued the directive for the nomenclature change. The forum alleged that vested political interests might be trying to create divisions among the district’s indigenous communities for political gain. There was no immediate response from the council authorities.
