Dibrugarh: Jorhat district administration and NDRF’s 1st Battalion on Friday held a flood-awareness programme at Nimati Ghat.Located on the Brahmaputra’s bank, Nimati Ghat is Jorhat’s key ferry link to Majuli, making it critical to flood-preparedness efforts.District officials, NDRF personnel, village heads, disaster management field officers and residents took part in the programme, aimed at strengthening community readiness during the monsoon.Officials sensitised residents on early preparedness, emergency response protocols, safety precautions and ways to protect lives and property during floods.“Every year, the Brahmaputra tests the resilience of our riverside communities. Our objective was to ensure that when the water rises, our people are not caught unprepared. Rapid response saves lives, but rapid response is only effective when the community itself knows what to do in the first few critical minutes. That is why these ground-level interactions are very important,” a district official said. After the programme, officials and NDRF personnel inspected the flood-prone No. 8 Spur on the bank of the Brahmaputra. The boulder-and-concrete structure, built perpendicular to the riverbank to deflect current and curb erosion, is considered among the district’s most vulnerable points during high-flow periods. The team assessed ground conditions and reviewed preventive measures.
