Guwahati: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of a factory blast in Cachar that killed four workers and injured two.The commission issued notices to Assam’s chief secretary and the Cachar senior superintendent of police, seeking a detailed report within two weeks.Molten metal reportedly spilt on workers after the explosion. Victims’ families and residents alleged that similar incidents occurred at the factory earlier.“The commission has observed that the contents of a media report, if true, raise serious issues of violation of human rights. The report to be filed by the Assam chief secretary and the Cachar senior superintendent of police is expected to include the status of the health of the injured, as well as disbursement of compensation to the next of kin of the deceased and to the injured workers,” the commissioner stated.The explosion occurred at Kade Global Infrastructure LLP’s metal-processing factory on July 26. Police arrested five people the next day as residents protested, demanding the factory’s permanent closure.Those arrested included company director Rakesh Kumar Surana, factory manager Amir Chand Jahangir and three employees. Surana was arrested in Guwahati and taken to Silchar for questioning.
