GUWAHATI: Ashiq Ali, the prime accused in the murder of Gauhati University student Nimisha Thakuria, was shot in the leg in a police encounter early Tuesday after he allegedly tried to escape from custody at Dharapur, police said.The incident took place around 3.30am when Ali allegedly attempted to flee while being taken by police from Dharapur.Police opened fire, hitting him in the leg. He was subsequently taken to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where he is undergoing treatment.Ali, 26, was arrested a few days ago in connection with the death of 22-year-old Nimisha, who was found unconscious at a homestay in the Garal-Dharapur area on September 26.She was taken to GMCH, where doctors declared her dead.Police had initially detained Ali after Nimisha was found dead.He had told investigators that she had died by suicide after allegedly hanging herself from a ceiling fan, but police said his claim would be verified and that all possible angles were being investigated.Ali was later arrested as the investigation progressed.Police have also been probing the role of a homestay staffer and allegations of evidence being destroyed in connection with Nimisha’s death.
