Guwahati: A newborn girl was rescued after being found hanging from a tree in Maligaon on Sunday morning, police said.The baby was spotted around 4 am in a forested area near Uday Giri Path in Devkota Nagar and rescued by residents. The child was wrapped in a cloth and tied to the tree.“The baby was spotted and rescued by the neighbours. The newborn is alive and safe,” said Amrit Kumar Singh, officer-in-charge of Jalukbari police station.Police traced the baby’s mother during the investigation. “We have found the mother; she has been identified as Monisha Muria and is currently being questioned. However, the father is still absconding, and we are trying to locate him,” he added.The baby was taken for a medical examination after the rescue. Police are investigating the circumstances leading to the abandonment and the involvement of those connected with the incident.Singh said no case had been registered yet.Residents suspect that the baby may have been left there three to four days ago, though the circumstances remain unclear. They believe the secluded spot may have been chosen to conceal the newborn.
