NE marks Gandhi Jayanti with tributes and clean‑up drives

Shillong/Aizawl/Guwahati: Tributes poured in across the northeast on Friday marking the 157th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, with leaders and citizens reaffirming his ideals of truth, non‑violence and public service.In Meghalaya, governor Chandrashekhar H Vijayashankar and CM Conrad K Sangma led the observance, stressing the growing relevance of Gandhiji’s message of peace and tolerance in a conflict‑ridden world. Floral tributes were offered at the Gandhi statue at Main Secretariat in Shillong, where officials pledged to uphold his principles in public life.In Mizoram, governor Vijay Kumar Singh, accompanied by senior ministers and officials, paid homage at the Gandhi statue at the state secretariat in Aizawl. The leaders also joined a cleanliness drive under Swachhata Hi Seva campaign, sweeping the premises to highlight Gandhi’s emphasis on hygiene and civic responsibility.In Assam, BJP organised a statewide Swachhata Abhiyan to honour Father of the Nation. Party workers cleaned roads, parks and public spaces across districts, echoing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to strengthen Swachh Bharat Abhiyan as a people’s movement. BJP state president Dilip Saikia and MLA Vijay Gupta led the drive in Guwahati, paying floral tributes at Shaheed Bedi near Tarun Ram Phookan Park.Across the region, leaders and citizens alike invoked Gandhi’s enduring vision of cleanliness, compassion and unity — ideals that continue to guide India’s journey toward a more peaceful and conscious society.
