Mother allegedly drowns four-month-old twins, attempts suicide in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: Four-month-old twin babies were found dead at their home in Vajarahalli, south Bengaluru, Tuesday, while their mother was found trying to end her life in the same room.According to the complaint filed by the babies’ father, Ramalingappa, 50, a real estate businessman, his wife, Umadevi, 40, had been undergoing psychiatric treatment after allegedly showing unusual behaviour, following the birth of their daughters on May 5 through IVF treatment. The couple got married in 2002.Ramalingappa said for one and a half month after the delivery, Umadevi had allegedly shown disinterest towards the children and said she wanted to be admitted to an ashram. She was subsequently taken for treatment at hospitals in Raghuvanahalli and Nimhans, where doctors reportedly attributed her behaviour to postpartum depression and hormonal imbalance following childbirth. On Tuesday, Ramalingappa returned home around 2.45pm and found the door of a room locked. After forcing it open, he found Umadevi hanging from a dupatta and rescued her. The twins were found unconscious inside the same room. They were rushed to a private hospital, where doctors said they may have died due to drowning. The family suspects she drowned the babies in a bucket full of water.Talaghattapura police have registered a case under BNS section 103 (punishment for murder).
