Guwahati: Monsoon is likely to retreat from the northeast by Oct 15, though rain may continue in parts of the region until next week.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said conditions were becoming favourable for further withdrawal of Southwest Monsoon from the northeast over the next three to four days.“Conditions are becoming favourable for further withdrawal of Southwest Monsoon from some more parts of eastern India and Northern Peninsula, and many parts of northeast India during next 3-4 days,” IMD said in a media release on Thursday.The monsoon completely withdrew from the northeast on Oct 14 in 2024 and 2025, and on Oct 17 in 2023.The IMD forecast isolated to scattered rain in Arunachal Pradesh until Oct 10; Assam and Meghalaya until Oct 11 and again on Oct 13-14; and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura until Oct 14. Thunderstorms and lightning are likely in parts of Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and Mizoram on Friday.The Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati also warned of isolated thunderstorms and lightning over Meghalaya, Manipur and Mizoram on Friday.Several parts of Assam, including Guwahati, received rain on Thursday. Gusty winds uprooted trees in Bonda on the outskirts of Guwahati and in parts of lower Assam, including Goalpara. Authorities later cleared the affected roads.The rain brought relief to farmers in parts of Assam, where rainfall had remained deficient as paddy crops neared the flowering stage.“If the monsoon withdraws completely by Oct 15, as it has in the past two years, Durga Puja is likely to remain largely rain-free,” a Met department official said.
