Times News NetworkLudhiana: Police have arrested a Mohali resident for allegedly duping a Jagraon man of Rs 2.3 lakh. The accused, posing as a woman on social media, allegedly targeted people aspiring to go abroad and cheated them on the pretext of arranging visas.Police identified the accused as Aman, a resident of Kurali in Mohali district. According to investigators, he had created fake accounts on social networking platforms using the names and identities of women. A case was registered against him on the complaint of Manjot Singh, 26, a resident of Kular village in Jagraon.The complainant alleged that he received a message on Snapchat on May 13 from an account named “kaurgill8146”, offering assistance in obtaining an Australian visa. The account holder allegedly introduced herself as Barkat Kaur Gill and claimed to be a resident of Australia.She told him that she had paid money to a travel agent for an Australian visa for a woman who later backed out. According to the complainant, the accused claimed that the travel agent had refused to refund the money but had agreed to arrange a visa for another person instead.Manjot alleged that the accused initially demanded Rs 45,000 as processing charges and later sought additional payments on various pretexts, including obtaining an IELTS certificate and visa processing. Between May 15 and May 23, he transferred around Rs 2.3 lakh.The complainant said the woman told him she would come to India and meet him on May 24. However, on that day, her phone number was switched off.
